The New York Red Bulls play their home games at Giants Stadium at Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Tab Ramos, the first player to come on board with MLS, did so by becoming MetroStar. His 1994 World Cup teammate Tony Meola also joined the Metrostars, as did A.C. Milan star Roberto Donadoni. Other soccer luminaries, such as 1990 World Cup player Peter Vermes became the first team captain for the Metrostars, and Venezuelan Giovanni Savarese emerged as the Metros' first superstar. The team's original coach was Eddie Firmani formerly of New York Cosmos. The club hasn't known much success, but there have been the odd triumphs along the way. The team's highest attainment in the MLS was reaching the MLS Cup semifinals in 2000. The MetroStars reached three semifinals in the US Open Cup, 1997, 1998, 2000, and they made the final in 2003, unfortunately losing 1-0 to the Chicago Fire. In August 2000, the Metros' Clint Mathis scored five goals against the Dallas Burn, setting a MLS record. It is performances of that caliber that means Red Bull New York tickets are still in some demand.
Despite being one of the few teams already established at the beginning of MLS, Red Bulls have experienced several name changes in the past few years. The team was initially called the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, but in 1997 they became simply the MetroStars. When the club was bought by Red Bull in early 2006 they became Red Bull New York, but the team's playing squad goes by the more pleasant-sounding New York Red Bulls. There has been controversy among fans of the MetroStars at the name change, similar to the response of soccer fans in Austria, where Red Bull bought SV Austria Salzburg and renamed it FC Red Bull Salzburg.
