NY Knicks Team History

The New York Knicks (formally the Knickerbockers) are a professional basketball team located in New York City. The Knicks are in the Eastern Conference's Atlantic division, and are one of the founding members of the Basketball Association of America(BAA), which merged with the National Basketball League (NBL) in 1949 to form the current NBA. The Knicks have won two NBA Championships in the history of their franchise (1970 and 1973), along with 8 conference titles and 5 division titles. New York plays its home games at Madison Square Garden located in Manhattan. In the 1980’s they struggled heavily, both on the court and in attendance for their games, but a strong comeback to prominence in the 90’s with star Patrick Ewing among others brought more attention to the franchise. Today the they are one of the premier teams in the league, despite having not won an NBA Championship in 30 years.

Knicks Rivalries

As one of the NBA's oldest teams, as well as one of the most visible, it's no surprise that the Knicks have fostered some heated rivalries over the years. Some sports fans make a special trip to New York City just to watch their team take on the Knicks at the fabled MSG. The only thing better than watching the Knicks play at home is watching them take on one of their big rivals, because you know the MSG crowd is going to be insane. Here's a look at some of the bigger Knicks rivalries.

Knicks vs. Nets - The Battle of New York

While there was always a rivalry between the Knicks and the Nets when they were known as the New Jersey Nets, the franchise's move to Brooklyn in 2012 ratcheted up the competition to a considerable degree. Now they were both New York teams, fighting for the hearts of the citizenry as well as media coverage on television and the city's many tabloids. While the change to the Brooklyn Nets was big, what really intensified the Knicks Nets rivalry was Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov's incredible amount of spending. Prokhorov has spared no expense on fielding a contender, and has intensified the pressure on Knicks Owner James Dolan as well as GM Steve Mills to keep the Knicks as the Big Apple's favorite basketball team. With the intensity of New Yorker's love for basketball, demand for Knicks vs. Nets tickets has gone through the roof, as everyone wants to be a part of this rivalry. Wether the Nets Knicks game is at Madison Square Garden or the Brooklyn's Barclays Arena, you know the crowd is going to be into it. So if you can make it to a game, don't pass up a chance to enjoy one of the most intense atmospheres in sports.

Knicks vs. Celtics - New York vs Boston

As another avenue for the intense rivalry between New York and Boston, the Celtics and Knicks have had their share of intense games. Both teams have a passion for their city few teams can match, and a Knicks win tastes so much sweeter when it comes against the Celtics. When you look at the passion of other New York Boston rivalries like Yankees vs Red Sox, Giants vs Patriots, and Rangers vs Bruins, it's no surprise that Celtics Knicks tickets are as popular as they are. There have been some classic Celtics vs Knicks moments over the years, including Patrick Ewing bringing the Knicks back from a 2-0 series deficit in the first round of the 1990 Eastern Conference playoffs. That series saw Ewing put up 44 points in a 135-108 win in game four to force a game five. Many Knick fans also recall fondly Bernard King and his 44 points to lead the Knicks to a 106-104 win in Game 7 of the 1984 Eastern Conference Semifinals. You never know what you will see when you buy tickets for a Knicks vs Celtics game, so miss the opportunity of seeing one in person.

Melo vs. LeBron

As Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James entered the NBA in the same season, with James the No. 1 pick and Anthony the No. 2 in the draft, there was always competition between the two. That competition wasn't as pronounced when they both played in smaller markets, but when Anthony joined the Knicks and James took his talents to South Beach to join the Miami Heat, the Knicks vs Heat rivalry became something meaningful, and both players turn up the juice when they face each other. These are two of the best players to play the game, and there is always a chance that something special will happen when they are both on the court together. After four seasons in Miami, LeBron brought his talents back to Cleveland -- but you can bet that the Garden will be rocking when LeBron comes to visit.

The Knicks and Madison Square Garden

The Knicks of course play home games at the historic Madison Square Garden, which recently underwent massive renovations. MSG is one of the most beloved venues in all of sports, with a capacity of 19,812 for NBA games. Hearing the crowd at MSG go nuts after a big shot is like nothing else, and if you buy tickets just getting into the venue is worth it.
