New York Giants Information
Bought for $500 in 1925, the New York Giants have enjoyed huge success in their glittering history. Although originally named after the baseball team that moved to
San Francisco, the Giants established themselves a viable contender in the
NFL in the years before the
Super Bowl. They appeared in 15 Championship Games between 1927 and 1963, winning the title four times. After some lean years, a group of new stars emerged, and led
New York to its first
Super Bowl title in 1987. Quarterback Phil Simms, linebacker Lawrence Taylor, and coach Bill Parcells etched their names indelibly into Giants history, winning another
Super Bowl in 1991.
Age and wanderlust plunged the team into inconsistency, and only now are the Giants putting together another competitive squad. With coach Tom Coughlan building the team around young quarterback Eli Manning, the future prospects for New York look good. After a difficult first year in the league, Manning is widely expected to improve quickly and lead the Giants into the playoffs.
It's no secret that New York fans are some of the toughest, loudest, and most passionate in the country, and when they sense that great things are about to happen, it's a safe bet that they will. New York Giants NewsHoping to improve on their 11-5 record from 2005, the Giants acquired multiple Pro Bowl linebacker LaVar Arrington as a free agent during the 2006 offseason, as well as cornerback Sam Madison as a free agent. Madison stayed nine years at Miami, going to the Pro Bowl four straight times between 1999-2002. Other notable acquisitions for the Giants included free safety Will Demps from Baltimore, cornerback R.W. McQuarters from the Detroit Lions, and linebacker Brandon Short from the Carolina Panthers.
In the 2006 NFL Draft, the Giants first pick was defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka from
Boston College. Their next pick went on Miami University wide receiver Sinorice Moss. Among the rest of their picks was Guy Whimper of East Carolina, Gerris Wilkinson from Georgia Tech, Alabama Safety Charlie Peprah, Barry Cofield from
Northwestern University, and Gerrick McPhearson from Maryland.
The Giants enjoyed their first undefeated preseason since 1990 (4-0), when they won Super Bowl XXV. NY Giants playoff tickets were suddenly a hot commodity. Unexpectedly, a litany of mistakes, errors and tactical ineptitude stained the Giants regular 2006 season. They attained an 8-8 season record for 2006. The Giants won five games on the bounce following a 1-2 start, gaining a two game lead in the NFC Eastern Division, but injuries to important offensive and defensive keystone players hurt their chances. The Giants lost six of seven games in the second half of the season, including a 24-21 defeat to Tennessee, where they inexplicably lost a 21 point fourth quarter advantage. Luckily, the Giants managed to land a wildcard birth in the NFC playoffs, but the Eagles knocked them out in Philadelphia, 23-20.
Following their 1-2 start, and that five game winning streak, New York Giants went down 38-20 to the Chicago Bears, the eventual Superbowl runners up. They were then beaten by the Jaguars, the Titans and the Cowboys, in a mid-season drop in form which proved to be their undoing. It was a thriller at Giants Stadium against the Cowboys that saw Eli Manning in great form, as well as Tony Romo now on for the Cowboys in place of Drew Bledsoe struggling to find his feet. What looked like a certain tie was won at the death when Romo emerged as quite the star, orchestrating a variety of clever and audacious moves which saw the Giants defense all over the place. The 20-20 scoreline became 23-20 to the Cowboys, when a bad time-out by the Giants led to a field goal by Gramatica. They stumbled through the remainder of the NFL schedule, and were ousted by the Philly Eagles in the playoffs, and in truth most Giants fans will probably be looking for tickets to Giants Stadium with 2007 on their minds, knowing there's glory ahead. It's just a matter of when and not if.
