Formed in 1967, the Saints were absolutely abysmal in their early years. Twelve consecutive losing seasons in their first twelve years of existence hardly bade well for the franchise. Slowly, however, the team began to turn around. 1979 saw the team record an 8-8 record, and in 1987, New Orleans made their first playoff appearance under head coach Jim Mora, and Saints playoffs tickets were changing hands in serious numbers. The Saints made three consecutive postseason appearances from 1990 to 1992, but lost in the first round each time.

Despite closing out the 20th century with a string of sub-par seasons, the Saints are finally building a team as flamboyant as their home city.
