About the Show:

The Mystery of Edwin Drood is a murder-mystery musical written by Rupert Holmes and based on the novel of the same name by Charles Dickens. Because the novel was unfinished at the time of Dickens' death, the musical offers several options for endings, which are put to an audience vote (Drood made history as the first Broadway show to use this innovative structure). The original 1985 production premiered as part of the New York Shakespeare Festival and subsequently transferred to Broadway with a cast featuring Betty Buckley (Sunset Boulevard, Cats, Pippin) in the title role. It won 5 Tony Awards, including the coveted trio of Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Score. A West End production and two national tours followed shortly thereafter. Many notable actors in the Broadway cast would later go on to great success, including Judy Kuhn (Les Miserables, Disney's Pocahontas), Paige O'Hara (Showboat, Disney's Beauty and the Beast), Rob Marshall (director of Chicago and Nine films) and Donna Murphy (The King and I, Passion). Plot Synopsis:

At the Music Hall Royale in London, the resident acting troupe prepares for the premiere performance of The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Troupe members explain to the audience the story of Dickens' untimely death and the role they will play in determining the outcome. The Chairman, a master of ceremonies, encourages the audience to be wild and uncivilized as the performance begins and the characters are introduced.

John Jasper, a choirmaster, is a seemingly dignified man who is really tortured by inner demons. His nephew, Edwin Drood (played by male impersonator Alice Nutting) discusses his arranged marriage to Rosa Budd and his plans to venture to Egypt after the wedding. It is Rosa's birthday and John Jasper has composed a song for her to sing. Meanwhile, twins Neville and Helena Landless enter escorted by Reverend Crisparkle. When Rosa faints due to the brazen lyrics of the song, Helena comforts her and Neville displays an attraction to her. Princess Puffer, a madame, then introduces herself and it is revealed that Jasper is a regular at her opium den. While he dreams of Drood and Rosa, it is made clear that Puffer knows Rosa somehow.

The following day, when Jasper introduces Edwin to the Landless twins, they become offended at his plan to pave a road in Egypt with stones from the pyramids, causing an argument. While Jasper sneaks into the cemetery to retrieve a tomb key, Edwin and Rosa break off their marriage plans but decide to keep it a secret until after Christmas. Back at Jasper's home, all are united at Christmas dinner, but their grudges, secrets, and devious motives come out. As the guests depart, Edwin and Neville head out to the river, Edwin having borrowed Jasper's topcoat.

The next day, Edwin has disappeared and Crisparkle's assistant Bazzard has discovered Jasper's topcoat bloodied and torn. Neville, the prime suspect in the assumed murder, is apprehended but then released. Meanwhile, Jasper reveals to Rosa that he is in love with her, which causes her to become angry and turn on him.

Act Two opens six months later, and Edwin Drood is still missing and presumed dead. Once the show gets to the last moment Dickens wrote before he died, each plot development is put to an audience vote: the true identity of a shady stranger, the identity of Edwin's murderer, and even two lovers who unite for a happy ending. Order your The Mystery of Edwin Drood tickets today to witness (and have a hand in writing) this uncertain yet compelling murder mystery.
