About the Show:Miss Saigon is a beautiful and tragic musical by Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alain Boublil, who also teamed up to produce the smash hit Les Miserables. Their dramatic and musical talents are showcased yet again in this sweeping epic story based on the Puccini opera Madame Butterfly. Like the opera, it tells the story of an Asian woman abandoned by her American lover, but it is set in 1970s Vietnam and the original romantic pair of a Japanese geisha and American lieutenant is replaced by a Vietnamese bargirl and a U.S. Marine. Since its debuts in London and on Broadway, the show has been critically adored and wildly commercially successful, ranking among the top dozen longest running shows on Broadway with over 4000 performances on the Great White Way alone. Miss Saigon has danced into fans' hearts with such heartfelt songs as "Last Night of the World," "I Still Believe," and "Sun and Moon." Lea Salonga, the original star, launched her career with the title role and has gone on to star in other high-profile productions such as Les Miserables as well as providing the singing voices of the Disney princesses Jasmine (Aladdin) and Fa Mulan (Mulan and Mulan II). Plot Synopsis:It is April 1975, shortly before the fall of the capital city of Saigon, at a sleazy Vietnamese club called "Dreamland." Kim, a seventeen-year-old girl on her first day as a bargirl, is greeted by the Engineer, the French-Vietnamese man who owns the club, and the other working girls, who laugh at her childlike innocence. Two U.S. Marines, John and Chris, party at the club, aware that they will be leaving Vietnam very soon. John buys Chris a room with Kim and the two sleep together. When they awaken, Kim refuses Chris' money and the two pledge their love for each other. They hold a makeshift wedding ceremony when Thuy, Kim's cousin to whom she had been promised since age 13, arrives and tries to take her away. Chris promises to take her away with him when he leaves Vietnam. Three years later, a street parade is taking place in Saigon (now called Ho Chi Minh City), celebrating the third anniversary of the defeat of the Americans and the reunification of the country. Kim, with her three-year-old son, Tam, live in an impoverished area avoiding being found by Thuy, now a commissar in the new government, and waiting for Chris to come back for them. Meanwhile, in America, Chris lives with Ellen, his new American wife, and continues to have unsettling dreams about Kim, worrying that she is in danger. When Thuy finally finds Kim and learns of Tam, he tries to kill the child, but Kim escapes with her son and the Engineer, who believes he can get a free ride to America if Chris does come back for them. Chris's tortured soul and Kim's intense longing continue to pull the pair closer together. Get your Miss Saigon tickets today to see the rest of this epic story.
