2009 Vikings Preview:

The Vikings had a successful season last year, winning the NFC North for the first time since moving there and making it to the NFL playoffs for the first time since 2004. Their 10-6 record was good for the NFC North title however they lost to Philadelphia Eagles in the Wildcard Round of the Playoffs. But with the Vikes getting better each year since Brad Childress has been there it could be a good year for Vikings tickets holders everywhere. They have an explosive running game and capable receivers and one of the best defenses in the game. If they can get their quarterback situation figured out they will be a very tough opponent.

The Vikings struggled a bit during the early part of the 2008 season but got it together when it mattered most. They won five of the final six games last year and got into the playoffs. Vikings fans will recall that two of those wins came against very good teams in the New York Giants [tickets] and the Arizona Cardinals [tickets].

Head Coach Brad Childress, now entering his fourth year on the job, has improved the Vikings record each year, starting at 6-10 his first season up to 10-6 in 2008. The Vikings brought in some good players to address some holes. Most notable among those was the signing of Sage Rosenfels to compete with Tarvaris Jackson for the QB position. In the second round of the NFL Draft the Vikings picked up offensive tackle Phil Loadholt (Oklahoma), who will need to handle the right tackle position effectively. He is a very big (330 lbs.)and very strong defender and will be counted on to help the team win. Other than the draft and the Rosenfels signing, it was a pretty quiet off-season for the Vikings, discounting the aborted Brett Farve experiment. They lost some decent players in Matt Birk, Gus Frerotte and Darren Sharper, however the core of the NFC North champs is back and anyone with Vikings tickets expecting the team to take the division again.

Vikings offensive preview

The main stars in the Vikings offense is Pro-Bowl Running Back Adrian Peterson, one of the most important players on any team, and Brett Farve. The backup quarterback battle between Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels is going to be very interesting, and whoever wins out will need to bring his top game to crack the starting lineup. Jackson was a second-round draft pick in 2006. While he ended the season at the QB position, he has frustrated Vikings tickets holders with some questionable decision in important situations and did not have a great game against the Eagles in the playoffs. With this in mind, the Viking's front office got career-backup Sage Rosenfels to compete for the starting job.

Running back Adrian Peterson is now one of the best in the game and the Vikes unstoppable rushing attack he gives them a chance to win every game. During their 2008 campaign the six-time Pro-Bowler Peterson led the league with an incredible 1,760 rushing yards which was good for the 2008 rushing title. The 6-1, 200 lbs. Peterson is going to be a handful for whoever is across the scrimmage line from him. Backup back Chester Taylor is also a very talented player who is consistently relied upon in third-down situations. Taylor completed 25 catches on third down last season, good for sixth highest among all players. With Taylor and Peterson in the backfield it is going to be tough to stop the run against the Vikings.

But not content to rest on their laurels, the MN Vikings drafted talented wide receiver Percy Harvin to keep teams on their toes and entertain the Vikings ticket holders in attendance. Free agent Bernard Berrian (Bears) was brought in to add to the offense last year and paid immediate returns, giving the Vikings a dangerous deep threat. Berrian led all receivers with at least 40 catches last year with an incredible 20.1 average yard per carry. Vikings fans also know he set the NFL record for longest reception in NFL history with his 99-yard touchdown against his former team the Bears.

Looking to make a potent receiver core even deeper, the Minnesota Vikings went out and got first round draft pick wide receiver Percy Harvin (Florida)at the overall 22. SEC fans know that Harvin was a very dangerous opponent that Vikings ticket holders are hoping won't take long to make the jump the the NFL-level. Sidney Rice is also a potent threat, however Vikings ticket holder last year were not able to see that as he missed most of the season with a knee injury. However Rice is rehabbing nicely from the injury and looks to be ready to roll. Bobby Wallace is the most reliable receiver on the team and was Jackson's favorite target last season. He has the most catches on the team the past two seasons. Tight end Visanthe Shiancoe was another key piece in the puzzle down the stretch last year and had the most catches of any tight end in the NFL

A look at the Vikings defense:

Anyone who even slightly follows the NFL knows that the Vikings defense is their best weapon, able to shut down just about any team they face. This is a very solid defense that will always keep this team in the game. Last year their defense was better than both the Steelers and the Ravens, and they were able to hold opposing teams to an incredible 76 yards a game! Most of the same defense is back so they will be picking up where they left off. Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier is back with the Vikings and has become one of the best coaches not to be a head coach. His Tampa 2 system is obviously working with this very good defense, and there is no reason to think it won't continue again this year. We are talking about a Vikings defense that has led the NFL in rushing defense three years in a row. Nosetackle Pat Williams is a monster and perhaps is most responsible for Minnesota's effectiveness against the run. The fact that three of the Vikings defenders made the Pro-Bowl is a testament to just how good they are. Those Pro Bowlers, end Jared Allen and tackles Pat Williams and Kevin Williams will once again be a vital part of any success the Vikings are going to have. Allen has proved proficient at getting to the quarterback and had the most sacks on the team, 14.5, followed by Williams' 8.5. The Vikings defense is downright scarry, and you know that they are keeping up offensive coordinators all over the league.
