Minnesota Vikings Information
Few teams have enjoyed as much near-success in the
Super Bowl era as the Minnesota Vikings. Four times in the 1970s Minnesota reached the title game, only to be thwarted by the
Chiefs,
Dolphins,
Steelers, and then the
Raiders. Led by record-setting quarterback Fran Tarkenton and a mean defense known as the "Purple People Eaters," the Vikings continual dominance of the NFC was somewhat masked by their failure in the final game, though they certainly had no trouble selling
Vikings playoff tickets. That year, defensive lineman Alan Page made history by becoming the first defensive player to be named league MVP.
At the end of the 1970s, many of Minnesota's star players retired, and the team had to be rebuilt. The 1980s and 1990s saw stars such as quarterback Warren Moon and receiver Anthony Carter gracing the Metrodome. The Vikings reached the NFC Championship game twice in that period, but missed out on a fifth trip to the Super Bowl both times.
Recently, Vikes fans have been treated to a series of talented squads featuring players like wide receiver Randy Moss. The Metrodome's synthetic surface being conducive to speed and agility, Minnesota has shifted from defensive giants to offensive juggernauts, consistently playing attractive, winning football. Minnesota Vikings News
The Vikings' 9-7 record from 2005, the final legacy of previous head coach Mike Tice, was a record the team wanted to beat in the 2006 season. The Vikings were the very first team in the NFL in offseason 2006 to obtain a new coach, on the heels of Tice's leaving. The man they chose was Brad Childress, previously the quarterback coach at the Philadelphia Eagles and the University of Wisconsin. Among their picks in the 2006 NFL Draft were Chad Greenway, linebacker, from Iowa; Cedric Griffin, cornerback, from Texas; Ryan Cook, center, from New Mexico, and Ray Edwards, defensive End, from Purdue.
The Vikings won the first two games of the 2006 season, before going down to a slim 19-16 defeat by the Chicago Bears at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in week three. They lost again the following week to the Buffalo Bills, before beating the Detroit Lions and Seattle Seahawks in successive games. The following week against the in-form New England Patriots they were beaten 31-7. The Pats were 17-0 up at halftime, a far cry from the old Purple People Eaters defense the Vikings boasted way back in the 1970s. Three more defeats came, from the 49ers, Packers and Dolphins, and eventually the Vikes won again in week 12, at home to the Arizona Cardinals. They won just one of their remaining five games, and ended the 2006 season in 3rd place in the NFC North Division.
The Vikings will be licking their wounds and wondering what the heck happened after last season's struggles. They finished at 6-10, definitely not an improvement on Tice's final record. Soon, Minnesota Vikings tickets will be in demand for the 2007 season, and the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome will come alive again to the sights and sounds of the razzamatazz of the NFL. We can only hope that the seats of the stadium will be loud, the roster will be strong, and next year's Vikings have the stamina to take on the NFL schedule and bring back the bacon in style. Who knows, maybe next you'll be hunting down Vikings playoffs tickets.
