The Golden Gophers have had four players receive the Hobey Baker Award for the nation’s best player, and have had countless players represent their country in the NHL and the Olympics. In fact, the Hobey Baker Award was actually modeled after Steve Christoff, who lettered at the University of Minnesota before going on to play for the legendary 1980 United States Gold Medal team. Also, Neal Broten, a Minnesota center, was the first to receive the award in 1981.
