Metropolitan Opera Information

The Metropolitan Opera is the premiere opera organization in the country. For over a century, it has been producing the highest quality theatrical productions of the most esteemed works ever written. Patrons flock to the Metropolitan Opera House at New York's Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts to see performances ranging from 17th and 18th century baroque pieces to 20th century minimalist works. Its selections are extremely diverse and are given in many languages, including Italian, French, German, English, and Russian (with subtitles available).

As the largest classical music organization in the country, the "Met" presents more than 20 operas each season (September-May), from brand new productions to revivals of classics. The operas are presented in a rotating repertory schedule, so there are always multiple options in any given performance week, and there may be as many as seven performances in any given week, with matinees performed on Saturdays. The performers are world class, many having been educated through the Met's young artists' programs, and many being world-famous celebrities like Placido Domingo and Renee Fleming.

Some of the Metropolitan Opera's most popular presentations include Puccini's La Boheme, Tosca, and Madama Butterfly, Verdi's Aida, La Traviata, and Rigoletto, Bizet's Carmen, Gounod's Faust, Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, and Wagner's famous Ring Cycle (Das Rheingold, Die Walkure, Siegfried, and Gotterdammerung). More recent works include Benjamin Britten's Billy Budd (based on a Herman Melville story), Leos Janacek's The Makropulos Case, and modern, minimalist composer Philip Glass' Satyagraha (based on the life of Mahatma Gandhi).

The Metropolitan Opera truly provides world-class entertainment right in the heart of New York City. More than 800,000 people attend the more than 200 performances each year. Order your own Metropolitan Opera tickets and become part of the treasured artistic tradition.
