Other singles from "Angel" followed, including "I Want to Know What Love Is", a reworking of the well-known Foreigner hit, which didn't do as well as "Memoirs", peaking at number 60 on the Hot 100. "H.A.T.E.U." the album's curiously titled third single, contains the woeful line, "How'd our fairytale just end up this way?", possibly a telling reflection on Mariah's love affairs, some of which didn't end quite how she must have hoped. Mariah started singing at a young age. The daughter of a former opera singer and voice teacher, she soon decided to dedicate her life to music. Mariah was writing her own songs by junior high and missed several days of high school while working as a demo singer for recording studios in the area.

Her career continued on this upward trajectory for several years, but she would fall on hard times. Mariah and Mattola divorced and she entered the hospital in 2001.
