Mandy Patinkin burst onto the scene when he won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his performance as Che in the 1979 Broadway production of Evita opposite Patti LuPone. After some work in films such as Yentl and Ragtime, he returned to Broadway, playing Georges Seurat in the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Sunday in the Park with George. Once again proving his versatility, he went on to star as Inigo Montoya in the 1987 classic comedy film The Princess Bride ("My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.").

In 1991, Patinkin began a run as Archibald Craven in the Broadway musical The Secret Garden, which would continue for 706 performances. After releasing two solo albums ("Mandy Patinkin" and "Dress Casual"), he starred in the CBS show Chicago Hope, for which he won an Emmy Award. In 1998, he created a show called Mamaloshen (Yiddish for "mother tongue"), a collection of traditional and contemporary songs entirely in Yiddish; he performed it both on and Off-Broadway and toured the United States.

Patinkin delved into children's entertainment when he starred in 1999's Elmo in Grouchland before returning to Broadway again in 2000, earning a Tony nomination for the New York Shakespeare Festival's The Wild Party.In the mid-2000s, he found more television success with Showtime's morbid comedy-drama series Dead Like Me and the CBS crime drama Criminal Minds. In 2010, he starred in a Harold Prince/Susan Stroman-directed new musical called Paradise Found in London.

In late 2011, Patinkin booked a Broadway run for his successful concert tour with longtime friend Patti LuPone.
