About the Show:

Man of La Mancha is a musical by Mitch Leigh (music), Joe Darion (lyrics), and Dale Wasserman (book). It was adapted from Wasserman's 1959 non-musical teleplay I, Don Quixote, which was based on Miguel de Cervantes' essential novel Don Quixote. First debuting at Connecticut's Goodspeed Opera House in 1965, it soon moved to Greenwich Village's ANTA Washington Square Theatre and then to Broadway in 1968, playing the Martin Beck, Eden, and Mark Hellinger Theatres during its more than 2,300-performance New York run. It has since been revived on Broadway several times, including in 2002 starring Brian Stokes Mitchell (Ragtime). Now a classic of musical theatre, Man of La Mancha features a memorable score, including the song "The Impossible Dream." Become a dreamer yourself and get your tickets today.

Plot Synopsis:

In the late 1500s, Miguel de Cervantes and his manservant are being kept in a dungeon by the Spanish Inquisition for foreclosing on a monastery. The aggressive prisoners set up a mock trial to decide whether they will confiscate all of the new pair's possessions. As his defense, Cervantes decides to put on a play, taken from his precious manuscript, and all of the prisoners will act in the show.

Using makeup and costumes from his trunk, Cervantes transforms himself into the elderly Alonso Quijana, an old, delusional man who imagines himself as knight-errant Don Quixote. With his "squire," Sancho Panza (his manservant in costume), he sets out to find adventure. Along the way, he encounters a four-armed giant (a windmill), a castle (a seedy roadside inn), and a fair maiden to rescue (a serving girl/prostitute). Those who meet Quixote think him crazy, but his inspirational spirit inspires them nonetheless. Buy Man of La Mancha tickets today to see how his (and Cervantes') story plays out.
