Mame Information

About the Show:

Mame is a musical with music and lyrics by Jerry Herman and a book by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin lee. It is based on the 1955 novel Auntie Mame, by Patrick Dennis, and the subsequent Broadway play of the same name. The musical, originally titled My Best Girl, is set in New York in the 1920s-40s and follows the life of Mame Dennis, an eccentric woman who is suddenly entrusted with the care of her orphaned nephew. She dances through life with the motto "Life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death."

The original Broadway production of Mame opened in 1966, starring Angela Lansbury (Sweeney Todd, A Little Night Music) and Beatrice Arthur (TV's Maude and The Golden Girls). It was a huge success and spawned several later iterations, including a 1974 film version starring Lucille Ball, a London production, a 1983 Broadway revival, and a 40th anniversary production at Washington D.C.'s Kennedy Center. Grab your Mame tickets today and start enjoying life's banquet!

Plot Synopsis:

Mame Dennis is an eccentric, bohemian, care-free woman whose life is turned upside-down when her brother dies and his 10-year-old son is left in her care. Rather than settling down, she introduces the young boy, Patrick, to her zany lifestyle, encouraging him to enjoy life. Other characters include Mame's secretary, Agnes Gooch, her friend Vera Charles (an actress and a lush), and Dwight Babcock, the straight-laced executor of her brother's estate. When Mame loses her wealth in the Stock Market Crash of 1929, she fails at several jobs but perseveres with an admirable sense of humor.

Eventually, Mame marries Beauregard Jackson Pickett Burnside, a wealthy Southern Gentleman and owner of a plantation in Georgia called Peckerwood. After the trustees of her brother's estate force Mame to send Patrick off to boarding school, she and Beau embark on an endless honeymoon, traveling around the world until Beau accidentally dies in a mountain-climbing accident. Now a wealthy widow, Mame returns home to find that Patrick has become a stuffy snob engaged to a smug debutante named Gloria Upson, who hails from a bigoted family. Mame gets Patrick to come to his senses and introduces him to a nice woman who eventually becomes his wife. In the end, Mame prepares to take Patrick's young son, Peter, on one of her signature wild trips to India. Order your Mame tickets now to see the whimsical exploits of this good-hearted, if considerably quirky, character.
