On October 20, 1977, a plane crashed in McComb, Mississippi, taking with it some of Southern Rock's most acclaimed artists. Those people were songwriter Ronnie Van Zant, guitar player Steve Gaines, and back-up singer Cassie Gaines, members of monster band Lynyrd Skynyrd. Skynyrd were never the same again, and a generation of Southern Rock fans were plunged into a black despair, alarmed and heartbroke that their favorite rock band were no more.
