Love, Loss and What i Wore Information
About the Show:
Love, Loss and What I Wore is a play by Nora Ephron (Sleepless in Seattle, Silkwood) and Delia Ephron (You've Got Mail, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants), adapted from the 1995 book of the same name by Ilene Beckerman. It is presented as a series of monologues by five women from different walks of life. These women tell stories about their lives, sometimes deeply emotional and sometimes witty and sarcastic, using elements of their wardrobes as inspiration. Women of all ages are able to identify with the themes and stories presented in this show, as it serves as a cathartic and empowering look into the female condition. In addition, it is performed by a rotating cast of actresses from various parts of the entertainment industry. Famous cast members have included Rosie O'Donnell, Kristin Chenoweth, Jane Lynch, Brooke Shields, Rita Wilson, Fran Drescher, Sherri Shepherd, Rhea Perlman, Carol Kane, Melissa Joan Hart, Didi Conn, Judy Gold, Janeane Garofalo, Samantha Bee, Caroline Rhea, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Tyne Daly, Joyce Van Patten, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Marla Maples, Emme, Minka Kelly, Anne Meara, Rumer Willis, Nikki Blonsky, and Alexis Bledel. A character named Gingy narrates the show, beginning by sketching the elements of her wardrobe that bring up the most vivid memories. Throughout the course of the show, she interweaves her own stories, including those of her three marriages, motherhood, and death of a child.
The other characters emerge, including a sassy vixen, a Chicago gang member, a stalwart cancer patient, and a reflective older woman. There are 28 individual stories and monologues throughout the performance, including those about the choice to wear high heels over practical footwear, the choice to wear large insignias on clothing, the influence of Madonna on women's fashion (it is claimed that all women of a certain age have emulated her at some point), the anxiety of the dressing room, and the influence of women's mothers on their fashion choices and beauty routines.
The show then discusses clothing-related stories that have gotten national attention. The Los Angeles Times had a piece on two very different prom dresses; a long, powder blue gown, to be worn with a nerdy date, and a black mini dress to be worn with the popular guy. One character debates over which dress describes her and can't seem to come to a resolution. The New York Times featured three emotional stories: one was about a woman who stopped wearing miniskirts after she had been raped; another described the worry and anxiety about what to wear at a wedding; the third profiled a woman's choice to dress her newly reconstructed breast with a tattoo.
Other topics include the importance of black in a woman's wardrobe (and some women's exclusive use of it), the transformation of a woman's body using spandex, shoes that produce "toe cleavage," and the infamous Juicy Couture track suit.
