The Lion King musical began on July 31st, 1997, in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the Orpheum Theatre. It was an instant success and was moved to the New Amsterdam Theater in New York City that October. On June 13th 2006 the show moved to the Minskoff Theatre to make room for the musical production of Mary Poppins. It began playing in London's Lyceum Theatre in London in 1999 where it is still playing. The show also ran until January of 2004 in Toronto and even had international productions in Melbourne and Sydney Australia as well as a recently added show in Johannesburg, South Africa. There are also two touring productions in the U.S.
The popular show is based rather closely on the popular Disney movie from 1994 with the addition of a few songs and scenes. The most notable change is that the role of Rafiki being changed to a female.
The Lion King is the story of the young lion cub Simba and the trials he faces as grows up to inherit the Pride Lands. As tragedy strikes, and Simba feels he is responsible, he abandons his home and tries to cope with his new life. But a series of events draws him back and he must decide, does he let his guilt consume him or will he do what he must to save the Pride Lands? Lion King is ideal for those who love animals and wish to take their enjoyment from sources other than the evils of humanity - unless of course, that's your pleasure, in which case Wicked tickets might be more your style.
