Kevin Gates was born Kevin Gilyard in Louisiana in 1986. Growing up, he was raised by a single mother in an impoverished neighborhood, which later inspired his music. He started recording when he was in middle school, but says he never took his music seriously until he began his rap career with Webbie and Lil Boosie. Shortly after being released from jail, Kevin Gates released several mixtapes that caught the attention of Lil Wayne, who signed him to Young Money Entertainment. Kevin Gates released the mixtape The Luca Brasi Story in 2013, which was critically acclaimed and downloaded more than 130,000 times. Later that year, he was signed to Atlantic Records and frequently collaborated with big names in the industry such as Pusha T, Gudda Gudda, Wiz Khalifa, and Juicy J.
Kevin Gates released his street album Stranger than Fiction in 2013 as well, which debuted at No. 37 on the Billboard 200. The song "Wylin'" was ranked No. 40 on Rolling Stone's "100 Best Songs of 2013" list. His second mixtape, By Any Means, was released in March 2014 and debuted at No. 17 on the Billboard. Kevin Gates cites Master P and Nas among his influences. He is currently focused on releasing songs and performing at various events.
