Kennedy Center Opera House Information

Located in Washington D.C., the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, is host to many events due to the many theaters it houses. While the Kennedy Center’s hosts the National Symphony Orchestra in its Concert Hall auditorium, and the Washington National Opera in the Opera House theater, the Kennedy Center hosts a slew of other events. These range from Broadway productions to smaller shows, including the Millennium Stage’s: Free performances every day, no ticket required programs.

The Opera House Theater

The second largest theater in the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts is the Opera House theater. With 2,362 seats, it is slightly smaller than the Concert Hall, but purpose built for ballet, opera, and musical theater. When not being used for performance events, The Opera House Theater hosts other events such as the annual Kennedy Center Honors, the nation’s most prestigious award for lifetime achievement in the arts. Disney’s The Lion King is currently showing in the Opera House, and is back after a highly successful run in 2008. Following The Lion King, the Opera house theater will be showing Evita, the rag-to-riches story of an Argentinean woman’s rise from the slums to the First Lady. Evita will run from September 30th through October 19th, 2014.

The Theater Lab

While there are many theaters located in the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, one of the more unique theaters provides audiences with a uniquely intimate experience with the performers. The Center’s Theater Lab has seating for 397 people, far smaller than the previously mentioned theaters, but sports a thrust stage, ensuring that no audience member is ever greater than 30 feet away from the stage. With its renovation complete in November, 2012, the Theater Lab has had many unique performances in congruence with the Millennium Stage series, which provides free shows throughout many of the theaters in the Kennedy Center. However, the show that the Theater Lab is likely to be known for is Shear Madness. Set in present-day Georgetown, Shear Madness’s plot revolves around a murder in a unisex hair salon. Incorporating the audience into the show, the largely improvised performances of the actors drives the story line, allowing audience members to guess "whodunit" at the end of the show. With nearly 12,000 performances at the Kennedy Center alone, Shear Madness has been a staple for the center for 26 years. Tickets for Shear Madness are available for purchase now.
