About the show:

Jerusalem premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in London, where it received such positive reviews that it transferred to the much larger Apollo Theatre in London's West End on January 28, 2010 for another well-selling run. Jerusalem tickets went very fast for this 12-week limited engagement, and lead actor Mark Rylance won the Olivier Award for Best Actor for his superb performance. The huge success of Jerusalem led to a Broadway production featuring many of the same actors and a few notable replacements, including Tony Award winner John Gallagher Jr.(Spring Awakening).

Jerusalem's three acts each take place in real time, with only a few hours passing between each. The show has some distinctly British qualities in that it remarks on England's history and cultural practices, but American audiences can connect with its universal themes nonetheless. The show is hilarious, but has some definite serious points, especially when it delves into Byron's past and the future consequences of his actions. Plot Synopsis:

Set on St. George's Day, the day of the county fair, Jerusalem follows Johnny "Rooster" Byron, a middle-aged waster who lives in a dilapidated trailer in the woods on the edge of town. The townspeople are sick of his drunken escapades and seek to evict him. Instead of addressing the eviction notice, he spends the day drinking and doing drugs with a band of local teenagers who follow him to escape their own lives, often through substance abuse. Meanwhile, Rooster's young son pleads for attention from his father and trouble comes when an angry man comes looking through Rooster's band of sin for his lost teenage daughter.
