In the 2006 NFL Draft, the Jaguars used their first pick on tight end Marcedes Lewis from UCLA football. They used their next pick on Maurice Jones-Drew, also from UCLA. The rest of their picks went on Oklahoma's Clint Ingram, Syracuse's James Wyche, Illinois State's Brent Hawkins, and Florida's Dee Webb. There may not have been quite as much happening at Jacksonville, trades wise, but they were a team who were ready for the rigors of the NFL schedule, and they wanted to bring a trophy back to Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. The first game of the season was at home to Dallas Cowboys, and the Jaguars caused much joy in town when they defeated the Cowboys 24 to 17. Three different defensive players intercepted Cowboys quarterback Drew Bledsoe during the game, the crowd went into overdrive, and demand for Jacksonville Jaguars tickets was suddenly very high. The following week the Jags played at home again, this time against Pittsburgh Steelers. The Jaguars managed a total shut out, beating the Steelers 9 to 0. It was the first time the Steelers had been shut out since 1985, and they barely made it across the midfield. The following week, the Jags traveled to Indianapolis, to face the mighty Colts, and predictably were beaten. The score was 21 to 14. The Jaguars next game was at Washington Redskins, where they were behind by a couple of points at the game's death, and after an over-enthusiastic goal celebration following a fumble recovery they were ordered out of the end zone and had to settle for the 30-30 tie via a field goal. Week five was an awesome result for the Jacksonville men, as they hammered New York Jets 41 to 0, but the next week they were beaten by the Houston Texans 27 to 7. They won their next two, but were then beaten by the Texans again, before defeating the New York Giants 26 to 10 in week 11. Jacksonville won 2 of their final 6 games, and a last gasp attempt to make the playoffs at Kansas City Chiefs was denied them, as they went down 35 to 30. The season was over for the Jags, but it had been a heck of a ride, and tickets to Jacksonville Jaguars games were cherished by those who'd been present at the more dramatic confrontations at Municipal Stadium. It was a season that illustrated perfectly the drama and excitement of the magical NFL for Jaguars fans. |
