Jack Hody Johnson was born in Oahu, Hawaii and began surfing at age 5 and by age 15 had made the surfing finals at the Pipeline Masters. His career ended shortly after due to a serious surfing accident at the Pipeline. Not being able to surf anymore, Johnson took up an interest in film and graduated with a degree in the subject from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Jack Johnson's Career began when he met G. Love, lead of alternative hip hop group G. Love and Special Sauce, and recorded the single "Rodeo Clowns" for his album Philadelphonic. Johnson would go on to record the soundtrack for "Thicker Than Water" a docu-style surf film released in 2000. Ben Harper's producer heard the record in passing and, in turn, helped him release his debult album Brushfire Fairytales garnering a large audience looking for Jack Johnson tickets.

After a series of Jack Johnson concerts he, along with his wife and friend, created Brushfire Records to release soundtracks for surf films produced by Woodshed Films (formerly known as The Moonshine Conspiracy). Since then, Jack Johnson has released three more albums. His latest work To The Sea is set for release in June 2010. Jack Johnson told MTV reporter James Montgomery,"I guess it's a reference to a father leading his son to the sea, with the water representing the subconscious. So it's about trying to go beneath the surface and understand yourself." The album was recorded in three weeks and is reportedly meant to show the raw aspect of Jack Johnson's work.
