Into the Woods Information

About the Show:

Into the Woods is one of composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim's most beloved works. With a book by James Lapine, it rearranges some classic Grimm Brothers fairy tales into a new story that makes audiences question the reality of "happily ever after." After a production at the Old Globe Theatre in 1986, it opened on Broadway on November 5, 1987 and closed on September 3, 1989 after 764 performances. The original Broadway cast starred Bernadette Peters (Sunday in the Park with George, Annie Get Your Gun, Follies) and Joanna Gleason (who won a Tony Award for her performance as The Baker's Wife). The show was critically acclaimed and the cast album won a Grammy Award. Since its Broadway debut, Into the Woods has enjoyed several high-profile revivals on Broadway and the West End, a US Tour, and several international productions. Plot Synopsis:

The narrator introduces several characters who all have desperate wishes. Cinderella wishes to attend the King's festival, Jack wishes that his cow would produce milk, and the Baker and his Wife wish more than anything to be able to conceive a child. Little Red Riding Hood arrive to buy bread from the Baker to bring to her grandmother's house while Jack's mother tries to convince him to sell his cow and Cinderella's stepmother and stepsisters mock her for wanting to go to the royal festival.

Later, the ugly old Witch who lives next door reveals that the reason the Baker and his Wife can't conceive is that she placed a curse on the line when the Baker's father stole her magic beans. The Witch says she will life the curse if the Baker can get four ingredients needed for a potion: "the cow as white as milk, the cape as red as blood, the hair as yellow as corn, and the slipper as pure as gold" before the stroke of midnight on the third day. The characters then venture into the woods: Jack exchanges his cow for "magic beans," Cinderella's family departs for the King's festival, Cinderella goes to her mother's grave to ask for help, Little Red Riding Hood journeys to her grandmother's house, and the Baker ventures out to find the ingredients for the potion, insisting that his wife stay behind.

As the assorted characters make their ways through the woods, they run into each other in various combinations and eventually find their ways to their own happily ever afters. But that only brings us to the end of Act 1. In the second act, the characters begin to discover that even though their wishes have come true, they are still unsatisfied. Happy couples develop wandering eyes, an unwatched beanstalk yields a dangerous giant, and the happily ever afters seem farther away than ever before.
