In the Heights Information

About the Show:

In the Heights is the high-energy, hip, and touching Tony Award-winning best musical of 2008. It was conceived by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who drew from his own experiences living in Manhattan's Washington Heights to write the music and lyrics for the show. It focuses on the struggles of the people of this neighborhood and how they pursue their dreams of a better future while supporting each other with a strong sense of community. It addresses issues of poverty, parent-child relationships, and interracial relationships, among others. While it does have some depressing themes, it also has several touching moments and is greatly energized by its hip-hop and Latin-inspired score and its innovative choreography, which combines elements of various dance styles to create high-energy numbers and highlight the poignant lyrics and spoken dialogue. This urban-oriented show has made strides toward broadening the Broadway audience and the traditional musical theatre canon.

Thanks to its fresh appeal and creative music and dance style, In the Heights was received extremely well by critics and audiences alike. It won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and several other major awards, including the Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album. It enjoyed a nearly three-year run on Broadway during which time it featured notable cast replacements Corbin Bleu and Jordin Sparks, and it launched a successful U.S. Tour. Plot Synopsis:

In Washington Heights, a largely Hispanic neighborhood on the northern tip of Manhattan, Usnavi opens his bodega (convenience store) one morning and supplies his regulars with their daily coffee and newspapers. After the morning rush dies down, Usnavi is surprised to see his old friend Nina Rosario, who has just returned from her first year at Stanford University. They catch up but she is still hiding the fact that she struggled at school. Meanwhile, Nina's parents are seeking a bank loan to keep their failing taxi service in business and Vanessa, who works at the salon across the street, is trying her best to save up enough money to escape the Heights and move into an apartment downtown. When Nina finally gets to talk to her parents, she reveals that she lost her academic scholarship and dropped out of school, leaving her parents crushed, especially her father, who feels useless because he can not afford to pay for her tuition. Nina goes to the salon for comfort, where owner Daniela is teasing Vanessa about Usnavi, with whom she has a date. Later, Usnavi reveals that he sold a lottery ticket worth $96,000. As everyone dreams of what they would do with the money, the matriarch of the neighborhood, Abuela Claudia, comforts them with her mantra of patience and faith that things will get better, despite her worsening health. Troubles at the Rosario household keep mounting as Nina begins to date Benny, an African-American employee of the family's car service, against her father's wishes. Tensions continue to rise and the future seems bleak, but the people of the Heights keep on pushing on and try to make the best of things in their tight-knit community.
