About the Theatre:The Imperial Theatre was designed by frequent Broadway architect Herbert J. Krapp and built by the Shuberts to replace their outdated Lyric Theatre. It officially opened on December 25, 1923 with Mary Jane McKane, a musical comedy by Oscar Hammerstein II, Vincent Youmans, and William Carey Duncan. The Imperial was designed to accommodate musicals, and it has hosted many important ones over the years, including Fiddler on the Roof, Gypsy, Dreamgirls, and Billy Elliot. The legendary musical Les Miserables played most of its 6,680 performance run there as well, from 1990 to 2003. It has also housed a few plays, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning August: Osage County. Notable Productions:
