About the Theatre:

The building that is now the Stephen Sondheim Theatre was erected and named for Henry Miller, a famous turn-of-the-century actor and producer. It was designed in the Neo-classical style by architects Allen, Ingalls, and Hoffman and was the first air-conditioned theatre in Manhattan. It opened on April 1, 1918 with a production of the play Fountain of Youth. In 1968, the theatre was sold and served as an adult movie house called Avon-at-the-Hudson. In 1978, it was transformed into a nightclub called Xenon before turning into a '50s- and '60s-themed club called SHOUT in 1985. Finally, in 1998, it returned to presenting legitimate theatre and was renamed the Kit Kat Club, taken from the musical it was then presenting, Cabaret. When Urinetown opened in 2001, it was renamed the Henry Miller Theatre yet again.

In 2004, the interior was demolished and rebuilt as part of the Bank of America tower. Since banking facilities reside above, the new theatre, designed by Cook+Fox Architects, is one of only two underground theatres on Broadway (the other being the Circle in the Square). After a few more productions, the theatre was renamed in honor of legendary composer Stephen Sondheim's 80th birthday in 2010. In 2011, it welcomed the hit, Tony-winning revival of Anything Goes, starring Sutton Foster (Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Drowsy Chaperone) and Joel Grey (Wicked, Cabaret).
