Green Bay Packers News

After their 8-8 record for the 2005 season, and Mike Sherman was fired, the Packers hired Mike McCarthy as their head coach. McCarthy had helped the Packers improve from 4-12 the previous year, and he made a difference in 2006. Though the Packers didn't qualify for the playoffs for the second consecutive year, the 2006 NFL season was a reasonably successful one for the Wisconsin team, in which they almost made the playoffs.

Following much speculation, quarterback Brett Favre returned to Green Bay for the 2006-2007 season, and the Packers also acquired Oakland Raiders three-time Pro Bowl defensive back Charles Woodson through free agency later the same day. The Packers used their fifth overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft to bring Ohio State linebacker A.J. Hawk to Lambeau Field.

Their first outing in the new 2006 NFL season was against the Chicago Bears, and they crashed to a resounding 26-0 defeat. It was the Packers first scoreless game since October 17, 1991. The following week they fell 27-13 to the New Orleans Saints, and questions were being asked after the Packers gave up a 13-0 lead. In week three at Detroit they achieved their first victory of the 2006 NFL season, beating the Lions by 31 to 24. Subsequent defeats by the Philadelphia Eagles and the Rams led into week seven, when Green Bay beat the Dolphins by 34-24, in a game where Ahman Green made a 70 yard touchdown run. The following week at home to Arizona Cardinals they won again, this time by 31-14. The Bills were the victors in week nine, on a cloudy day in Buffalo, winning 24-10 via three late plays which put them beyond the Packers' reach. After their week ten triumph at Minnesota, they were brought down to earth by a 35-0 hammering by the New England Patriots, when Tom Brady threw for 244 yards and 4 touchdowns. This was the first time the Packers had been shut out at Lambeau twice in a season. Defeats by the Seahawks and the New York Jets led into week fourteen, and a 30-19 win over the 49ers in San Francisco. They followed that with wins over the Detroit Lions, the Vikings, and the Bears, wrapping up their season in 2nd place in the NFC North Division. The Packers learned earlier in the day of the Bears game that the New York Giants had knocked them off the chance of a playoff spot by winning their game, but it didn't stop them from turning in a quite sterling performance just the same. They beat the Bears 26-7, revenge for the 26-0 defeat of the first game of the campaign, and that was the end of their 2006 NFL season. Though fans missed out of Green Bay Packers playoff tickets, there's always next year.
