Whether it's the alienation of trying to fit in at a new school, having a summer fling, or even teenage pregnancy, something in there is bound to remind the audience of how difficult and tumultuous being a teenager could sometimes be. The original incarnation for Grease began in 1971 as a play with some incidental music by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey at the Kingston Mines Theater in Chicago. After producers Ken Waissman and Maxine Fox saw the show they recommended that it would work better as a full scale musical. The revised version debuted at the Eden Theatre in Manhattan on February 14, 1972. The show did so well in the box office and garnered such good reviews that it was moved first to the Broadhurst Theatre on Broadway on June 7 where it was directed by Tom Moore and choreographed by Patricia Birch, then transferred to the Royale five months later. The show lasted for more than seven years and included in its cast at various points during its runs such names as Barry Bostwick, Adrienne Barbeau, Marilu Henner, Patrick Swayze, and John Travolta among others. It also spawned the hugely successful hit movie adaptation in 1978. On May 11, 1994 at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre the musical enjoyed a revival directed and choreographed by Jeff Calhoun where it ran for four years. It showcased the talents of such big names as Megan Mullally, Rosie O'Donnell, Chubby Checker, Sheena Easton, Lucy Lawless, Mackenzie Phillips, Joe Piscopo, Brooke Shields, and Sally Struthers. A second revival on Broadway directed and choreographed by Kathleen Marshall began with previews in July of this year with an official opening date of August 19th. This incarnation will include popular songs from the movie as well as from the original score. The lead roles of Danny and Sandy will be played by Max Crumm and Laura Osnes who won the opportunity on the NBC reality show Grease: You're the One that I Want!.
