Godspell Information

About the Show:

Godspell is the beloved musical by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin) based on the Gospel of Matthew. It follows a group of people who learn together the lessons of the Gospel and come to be a loving and caring community. Its structure is unique in that it is a series of parables punctuated by songs in various modern styles featuring lyrics from traditional hymns. The show features such classics as "Day by Day," "Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord," "Turn Back, O Man," and "Learn Your Lessons Well."

Debuting off-Broadway in 1971, Godspell's first professional production ran for more than 5 years (one of the longest off-Broadway runs ever) before transferring to Broadway in June 1976, where it ran an additional 527 performances, for a combined total of over 2,600. It has since been revived several times and toured the United States, its first Broadway revival being the 2011 40th Anniversary production. Because it can be produced on a low budget, Godspell is staged at many smaller theatres, and directors have offered many different approaches to set and costume design (they are never stated in the text). The original production made the company a troupe of clowns who follow Jesus in an abandoned playground, but there have been productions staged at a circus, a museum, and even on construction scaffolding. Godspell has become a cherished classic of musical theatre, so don't wait any longer to see it for yourself--get your Godspell tickets right away!

Review
"...brilliant in its intimacy, it provides a ruthlessly cathartic emotional experience. I would defy anyone to resist being enchanted by it, and to leave without singing, humming, or at least thinking of one of the songs..." Read the full review >>

Plot Synopsis:

Godspell is really more a series of thematically related episodes interspersed with songs than one progressive story. The show begins with God announcing his supremacy and various philosophers voicing snippets of their philosophies. In response, John the Baptist calls the community to order and baptizes them. Jesus also arrives, wishing to be baptized, and begins telling stories. In the first parable, Jesus explains that he has come to complete the work of the prophets. He tells the story of the widow and the judge and explains that God supports those who call to him. The company begins to understand Jesus' teachings and tells the story of the Pharisees and the tax gatherer, gleaning that men who humble themselves shall be exalted. Later, the company acts out the story of a servant who, after receiving absolution of a debt from his master, fails to pay the same kindness to another, and Jesus preaches the value of forgiveness. Then, the company plays charades to finish several important statements posed by Jesus, including "If a man sues you for your shirt..." and "If a man asks you to go one mile with him..." The Parable of the Good Samaritan and the parable of Lazarus follow, and then the company recites the beatitudes in a call-and-response style. After the parable of the sower of the seeds, the company realizes how they have grown into a community of caring and love. In a military-style unit, they perform the parable of the Prodigal Son and Jesus thanks the audience for coming, announcing an intermission.

The second act is structured similarly, including parables, lessons, short skits, and songs, and the company continues their journey of discovery together. To find out how this unique show comes to a resolution, check out the Godspell schedule and get your tickets today!
