About the Theatre:The Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, designed by Broadway architect Herbert J. Krapp, opened as the Plymouth Theatre on October 10, 1917 with a revival of the play A Successful Calamity, by Clare Kummer. It was built by the Shubert family to resemble the nearby Shubert and Booth Theatres and was run by director/producer Arthur Hopkins until his death in 1950. The Shuberts ran it from then on and renamed it on May 9, 2005 after Gerald Schoenfeld, longtime chairman of the Shubert Organization. In its early years, the Schoenfeld hosted the Broadway debuts of several notable plays, including Pride and Prejudice, Noel Coward's Present Laughter, The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, and Neil Simon's The Odd Couple. Musicals to make their Broadway premieres at the theatre include Stephen Sondheim's Passion, Harry Connick, Jr.'s Thou Shalt Not, Boy George's Taboo, and Frank Wildhorn's Jekyll and Hyde and Bonnie and Clyde.
