Georgetown's original men's basketball team was realized in 1907, and since then has seen the Thompson coaching dynasty lead the team to various successes. The Hoyas' current coach is John Thompson III, son of the legendary Georgetown coach of the same name, which reflects Georgetown's consistency as a basketball program dedicated to solid athletic continuity and accomplishment.
Georgetown's honors include appearing in the NCAA Tournament Final Four 5 times, and taking the Big East Men's Basketball Tournament 7 times. The Hoyas won the Big East Men's Basketball Tournament in 2007, and in 2008 they beat the Louisville Cardinals to win the regular season title. Georgetown's big rival is said to be the Pittsburgh Panthers, and Hoyas Panthers tickets are never far from the minds of Georgetown Hoyas fans.
Another big grudge game is Hoyas Red Storm.
