Gentlemen Prefer Blondes Information

About the Show:

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is a musical based on the best-selling 1925 novel of the same name (subtitled "The Illuminating Diary of a Professional Lady") by Anita Loos. It has a book by Loos and Joseph Fields (Flower Drum Song, Wonderful Town), music by Jule Styne (Funny Girl, Gypsy), and lyrics by Leo Robin (The Girl in Pink Tights, Lorelei). It debuted on Broadway on December 8, 1949 and ran for 740 performances, through September 15, 1951.

In the lead role of Lorelei, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes introduced Carol Channing, who would go on to star in such shows as Hello, Dolly! and become a musical theatre legend. In subsequent Broadway, West End, and regional productions, notable actresses to play Lorelei have included Jayne Mansfield, Barbara Eden, Mamie Van Doren, and Morgan Fairchild. In May 2012, a New York City Center Encores! production cast Megan Hilty (Wicked, 9 to 5, TV's Smash).

Gentleemen Prefer Blondes launched the popular songs "Bye, Bye Baby," and "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend," among others. The successful 1953 film adaptation became a signature role for star Marilyn Monroe. Order your Gentlemen Prefer Blondes tickets now to see this piece of musical history live.

Plot Synopsis:

In the 1920s, Lorelei Lee, a beautiful blonde, leaves her "sugar daddy" boyfriend, Gus Edmond, in Little Rock as she boards a ship to France with her friend, Dorothy Shaw. Lorelei is very popular among the men on the ship, notably rich Philadelphian Henry Spofford III and Englishman Sir Francis "Piggy" Beekman. When Lorelei receives a wire from Gus, she is afraid to open it for fear that he has discovered an old secret of hers. Sure that Gus is breaking up with her Lorelei tells Dorothy that they need to find some rich men, and scolds her for flirting with Olympic sportsmen, who are poor. She takes up with Josephus Gage, the "Zipper King," and pairs Dorothy with Henry Spofford. When Lorelei wants to buy Lady Beekman's tiara but can't afford it, she convinces Sir Francis to lend her the money.

When they arrive in Paris, two French detectives are looking for Lorelei and Lady Beekman's tiara, but the girls charm them into asking them out. Lorelei premieres the first French dress to have a zipper, and Henry proposes to Dorothy, only to have her refuse, claiming she is not good enough for him. Suddenly, Gus arrives and breaks up with Lorelei when he discovers that she is dating Josephus. He then gets revenge by dating dancer Gloria Stark, vowing to make her a star.

At a club, Lady Beekman is still trying to recover her tiara, and Gus nearly starts a fight with Josephus. Among the performers are Gloria and Lorelei, who sings "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend." Gus, clearly heartbroken, confesses that he loves Lorelei so much that he would abandon his father's business for her, and she admits that she shot a man back home who was trying to force himself on her. Touched by each other's honesty, they reconcile. Order your Gentlemen Prefer Blondes tickets today and learn all the details of this story of secrets, love, and life.
