Funny Girl Information

About the Show:

Funny Girl is a semi-autobiographical musical about the life of Fanny Brice: Broadway star, film actress, and comedienne. Originally titled "My Man," it also concentrates on her relationship with the charming yet troubled entrepreneur Nicky Arnstein. The show is largely character-driven, hanging on the personality, ambition, and drive of the determined Fanny, and her tragically doomed relationship with the love of her life, riddled with insecurity, jealousy, and desperation. The original production premiered on March 26, 1964 and ran for an impressive 1,348 performances. It was nominated for eight Tony Awards, but failed to win any due to stiff competition from Hello, Dolly!

Funny Girl launched the career of Barbra Streisand, who went on to reprise her role in the 1966 West End production and the 1968 film version, for which she won the Oscar for Best Actress. Today, the standout songs from the show are equally synonymous with Streisand's name. Classics like "People," and "Don't Rain on My Parade" endure to this day as favorites of the musical theatre repertoire, and lines like "Hello, gorgeous," have become cemented in popular culture. Plot Synopsis:

Fanny is a young girl with high ambitions in show business. When she finally nabs her first gig in vaudeville, her mother and her mother's friend, Mrs. Strakosh, try to talk her out of it because she does not look like the typical stage beauty. But Fanny refuses to listen and keep working for her dream with the help of her friend, dancer Eddie Ryan. She proves she has what it takes and her career starts to skyrocket. Meanwhile, Mrs. Brice and Eddie fear that once she becomes famous enough, she will forget about them. In a well-received turn, Fanny performs a would-be romantic number in the Ziegfeld Follies, but puts a humorous spin on it by ending it as a pregnant bride. Later, she meets Nick, a dashing and sophisticated man, and he accompanies her to a party at her mother's house celebrating her opening night. Some time later, the two meet at a Baltimore restaurant and express their love for one another. Though she knows he has been involved in high-stakes gambling, Fanny vows to marry Nick one day.

Once Fanny and Nick are married, they move into a Long Island mansion. Meanwhile, Eddie and Mrs. Strakosh try to convince Mrs. Brice to find a man since her daughter is now supporting her and she doesn't have to work. At the Ziegfeld Follies, Fanny has become the most popular star. Using Fanny as a connection, Nick tries to make some money for himself by asking Ziegfeld to invest in a casino. When he passes, Fanny insists on investing her own money but the project is a flop. Ashamed, Nick goes to desperate measures to find monetary success and reclaim his pride, but his shady dealings get him into serious trouble. Can Fanny's and Nick's relationship survive her fame and his insecurities? Get your Funny Girl tickets to find out.
