Footloose Information

About the Show:

Based on the iconic 1984 film of the same name (starring Kevin Bacon, John Lithgow, Dianne Wiest, and Sarah Jessica Parker, among others) the Footloose musical closely follows the same plot. It concerns a boy's quest to liberate a town where dancing has been made illegal. With music by Tom Snow and Dean Pitchford (and additional music by Kenny Loggins, Sammy Hagar, Eric Carmen, and Jim Steinman), the score features such songs as "Let's Hear It for the Boy," "Holding Out for a Hero," "I Can't Stand Still," "Almost Paradise," and, of course, the classic title song.

Footloose ran on Broadway from October 22, 1998 to July 2, 2000, a total of 709 performances, at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. The original cast included Jennifer Laura Thompson (Wicked, Nice Work If You Can Get It), Dee Hoty (City of Angels, 9 to 5), and Hunter Foster (Little Shop of Horrors, Urinetown). Though critical reviews were mixed, the show's talented stars and catchy music made it an enduring hit. A London production starring Derek Hough of Dancing With the Stars played in London in 2006, and there have been multiple US and UK tours. Fans all over the world love this classic story; pick up some Footloose tickets today and jump into the action!

Plot Synopsis:

Dance-crazy city kid Ren McCormack lives in Chicago with his mother, but when his father walks out and their finances take a hit, they are forced to move in with his aunt and uncle in a small town called Bomont. Once there, they attend church and become acquainted with Reverend Shaw Moore, who preaches of the evils of rock and roll. Later, at a gas station, Ren discovers that the Reverend's daughter Ariel is rebellious, running into the arms of her trailer-trash boyfriend, Chuck Cranston, a low-life who is only interested in her body. At school, Ren can't control his urge to dance, but when the principal catches him, he gets in trouble. His new friends inform him that the Reverend made dancing illegal in the town ever since a terrible car accident after a dance killed his son.

After school one day, the kids go to the local burger joint, where Ren has just been hired to work. When Ariel flirts with him, the others warn of Chuck's jealousy, but Ariel secretly yearns for an upstanding guy. After Chuck shows up and yells at her, she takes Ren to her secret hideaway and they talk. When Ren walks her home, Reverend Moore is angry that she has been out, and both storm off, leaving Moore to question whether he is being fair to her. At school the next day, Ren becomes fed up with the uptight residents of Bomont and fondly remembers the dance clubs that gave him relief in Chicago. He resolves to throw a dance to loosen everyone up and make a statement to the Reverend. The students eventually get on board, but when word reaches the Reverend, he pledges to do all in his power to stop it.

In preparation for the dance, Ren brings his friends to a dance hall in a neighboring town, where he teaches them to let loose and show off their moves. Meanwhile, Chuck goes to the Moores' house and alerts them that Ariel is not where she said she was. When she returns home shortly thereafter and the Reverend almost hits her, his wife Vi tries to tell him that his scolding is unreasonable.

As Ren prepares to present the dance to the town council, receiving much-needed support from his friends, Ariel arrives with bruises, saying that Chuck beat her up. When Ren comforts her, she reveals that her brother's death led to the dancing ban and she gives him some Bible passages to use in his presentation. But despite a compelling case, the motion is dismissed, and Ren is forced to talk to Reverend Moore personally. Order your Footloose tickets now to discover if Ren has the heart to convince the wounded, resolute Reverend to change his ways and allow the town to once again enjoy the celebration of dance.
