Plot Synopsis:
At the turn of the twentieth century in the Russian village of Anatevka, Tevye, a poor, Jewish milkman, lives with his wife and five daughters. The villagers have reverence for the traditions of their ancestors and live their lives in the old way, but change is slowly penetrating the community. Yente, the village matchmaker, brings news that the wealthy butcher, Lazar Wolf, wants to marry Tevye's oldest daughter, Tzeitel. But Tzeitel wants to marry her childhood friend, Motel the tailor. After Tevye promises Tzeitel to Lazar Wolf, he eventually relents to the breaking of tradition and allows her to marry Motel, much to Lazar Wolf's chagrin. Meanwhile, a brash, young radical named Perchik arrives and is given shelter in Tevye's home in return for tutoring his youngest daughters. When he falls in love with Tevye's second daughter, Hodel, Tevye once again resists but eventually caves in, allowing the marriage even though it is traditional for a matchmaker to arrange unions. When Tevye's third daughter, Chava, falls in love with a Russian non-Jew, Tevye puts his foot down and refuses to bless the marriage, disowning his daughter when she elopes. While domestic traditions seem to be replaced by modern ways, the residents of Anatevka also endure anti-Jewish violence which threatens their safety and ability to remain in their hometown.
