About the Show:

Eugene Onegin is a 3-act opera with music by Pyotr Tchaikovsky (The Nutcracker), who worked with Konstantin Shilovsky on the libretto, which was based on the verse novel of the same name by Alexander Pushkin. It preserves much of the verse from the novel and is a well-known example of lyric opera. First performed in Moscow, Russia in 1879, it has been widely produced and recorded and has become part of the repertory for many opera companies, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Plot Synopsis:

Act I: Madame Larina sits outside in the garden with the nurse Filippyevna as she ponders the courtship and marriage of her past. Her older daughter, Tatyana, is absorbed in a romantic novel while her younger daughter, Olga, greets the arrival of her fiance, Lensky, and his friend, Eugene Onegin. Onegin and Tatyana are immediately attracted to one another, and she writes him a heartfelt letter that night. But when he reads it, he responds that he can not be the husband she wants, offering her only friendship and breaking her heart.

Act II: At the ball in honor of Tatyana's name day, Onegin dances with her until the townspeople's gossip becomes too much. He then starts dancing with Olga, causing Lensky to become angry and jealous. As they flirt, Onegin avenges himself of the gossip and Olga protests Lensky's jealousy until Lensky is pushed over the edge, renouncing his friendship with Onegin and challenging him to a duel. When the time of the duel arrives, neither man wants to go through with it but neither can muster the courage to stop it. Onegin shoots Lensky dead.

Act III: Years later, after travelling around Europe, Onegin attends a ball alone at the palace of Prince Gremin in St. Petersburg. He is stunned to find that Tatyana is now the prince's wife when she enters looking more beautiful and regal than ever. Onegin suddenly realizes he is in love with her, so he sends her a letter expressing his feelings. She wonders if he is pursuing her now because of her status, but he insists that he has only the noblest of intentions. She resolves to remain faithful to her new husband and leaves him heartbroken.
