Biography: Eric grew up living with his grandparents, believing them to be his parents and his mother to be his sister. After a few years as a street minstrel, Eric joined a couple of small-time bands before becoming a member of the Yardbirds. Not satisfied with the pop-oriented direction the band was taking, Eric left the band to play purer blues music.
He formed Cream in 1966. The band was an instant success, with Eric earning the reputation of being Britain's premier guitarist. However, in-fighting led to the band's demise. Eric had a series of side projects before forming Derek and the Dominos. The band recieved lukewarm reviews and split after a short time.
Eric pursued a solo career, showcasing his musical virtuosity. The death of his child, a string of affairs and his battles with drugs and alcoholism have given his life a tragic quality, but he has recovered and re-emerged as one of the most brilliant guitarists of all time. Clapton's name has appeared beside some of the most famous and accomplished musicians in the world, and his fans are often the same ones who seek Bruce Springsteen tickets, and listen to the spiritual sounds of George Harrison.
