Die Fledermaus Information

About the Show:

Die Fledermaus (The Bat) is an operetta with music by Johann Strauss II (Die Zigeunerbaron) and a German libretto by Richard Genee (Der Bettelstudent) and Karl Haffner. The original source material was a German farce by Julius Roderich Benedix called Das Gefangnis (The Prison) and a French vaudeville play by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halevy called Le reveillon. The opera premiered in 1874 at Vienna's Theater an der Wien. Soon thereafter, it began debuting in other countries. Plot Synopsis:

Act I: Having been convicted of insulting an official, Gabriel von Eisenstein is set to serve eight days in prison, but when his friend Falke arrives to invite him to Prince Orlofsky's ball, he is convinced to delay turning himself in for a bit. Meanwhile, his wife Rosalinde is being serenaded by Alfred, a former lover, when prison governor Frank arrives to take Eisenstein away. In order to save Rosalinde's reputation, Alfred pretends to be Eisenstein and is sent to jail.

Act II: It is revealed that Falke has planned the ball to get back at Eisenstein for abandoning him in the town square while dressed as a bat, humiliating him. At the ball, Eisenstein pretends to be a Frenchman while Rosalinde is disguised as a Hungarian countess. Also arriving are Frank, also pretending to be French, and Adele, Rosalinde's maid, who is disguised as an actress. When Rosalinde recognizes Eisenstein, she steals his watch to prove that he has lied to her about going to jail.

Act III: At the prison the next morning, several people have been put behind bars and the rest are still drunk from the night before. With so many people impaired, in disguise, and pretending, the truth is sure to come out and each person is bound to get what's coming to them.
