Crazy For You Information

About the Show:

Crazy for You is a musical with music and lyrics by the great George and Ira Gershwin (Porgy and Bess, Nice Work If You Can Get It) and a book by Ken Ludwig (Lend Me a Tenor, Moon Over Buffalo). It is primarily based on the Gershwins' 1930 musical Girl Crazy, but includes songs from other shows as well. Some of its most famous songs include "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Shall We Dance?," "Embraceable You," "Slap That Bass," and "Nice Work If You Can Get It."

Crazy for You opened on Broadway on February 19, 1992, and ran for a considerable 1,622 performances. A London West End production opened on March 3, 1993 and had similar success, running for almost three years. The original Broadway cast included Jodi Benson (voice of Ariel in The Little Mermaid), Harry Groener (Cats, Sunday in the Park with George), and Beth Leavel (Mamma Mia!, The Drowsy Chaperone), among others, and Susan Stroman (The Producers, Young Frankenstein) won Tony and Olivier Awards for her choreography. Plot Synopsis:

It's the end of the season at the 1930s New York show The Zangler Follies, and while dance director Tess dodges the married Mr. Zangler's advances, aspiring dancer and banking family heir Bobby Child botches an audition for him. Later, Bobby is met by his wealthy fiancee of five years, Irene, and his mother, who asks him to go to Deadrock, Nevada and foreclose on a dilapidated theatre. Once there, Bobby notices how rundown the town is. Everett Baker gets a letter announcing the foreclosure of the Gaiety Theatre, and his daughter Polly vows revenge on Bobby. Everett refuses saloon owner Lank Hawkins' offer to buy the theatre before the bank takes it because he still clings to the memory of Polly's mother starring in all the old shows.

When Bobby comes in and sees Polly, he falls in love at first sight, much to Lank's dismay. In a desperate attempt to not blow his chance with Polly, he disguises himself as Mr. Zangler and proposes they put on a show to pay the mortgage. When Bobby asks ten Zangler Follies girls to come to Deadrock to help, the town becomes much livelier. Once Bobby whips the awkward cowboys into dancing shape, Irene comes into town and threatens to expose Bobby. Meanwhile, Polly has fallen in love with him. When the show opens, the turnout is pathetic, but the town feels closer than ever. As they celebrate the revitalization, the real Mr. Zangler stumbles into town.

In the saloon, Bobby gets ready to reveal that the Mr. Zangler Polly has fallen in love with is really him until the real Mr. Zangler comes in looking for Tess. He refuses her request to produce the show and she storms off. Zangler and Bobby (dressed as Zangler) bemoan their loveless lives. The next morning, Polly sees the two men, realizes what Bobby has been doing, and slaps him. At a town meeting, Bobby advocates trying the show again, but Polly speaks against it. By the end of the meeting, Polly comes around, but many others are disenchanted with the idea. Bobby leaves for New York just as Polly realizes that she loves him, and Mr. Zangler agrees to produce the show to win Tess over. Get your Crazy for You tickets now to see whether Deadrock can band together to save the theatre and whether Bobby and Polly will realize their mutual love.
