About the Theatre:The Cort Theatre was designed by Thomas W. Lamb and built by John Cort, founder of the Northwestern Theatrical Association. Its facade was modeled after the Petit Trianon in Versailles and the interior was designed in the style of Louis XVI-era Paris, complete with Pavanozza marble, plasterwork panels, and art glass. The theatre opened on December 20, 1912 with the play Peg O' My Heart by J. Hartley Manners. The Shubert Organization bought the theatre in 1927, and it was briefly rented out to host The Merv Griffin Show from 1969-72, but it has remained in legitimate theatrical use for the vast majority of its history. However, due to its location (east of Broadway), it is not booked as often as some other theatres. In any case, it has presented several successful plays, including The 39 Steps, the 2010 revival of A View from the Bridge starring Liev Schreiber (Scream) and Scarlett Johansson (Lost in Translation), and the wildly popular 2010 revival of Fences starring Denzel Washington (Training Day) and Viola Davis (The Help).
