The innovative philanthropist Lamar Hunt, originator of the term "Superbowl" and owner of the Kansas City Chiefs, also owned the MLS team, the Columbus Crew. and FC Dallas Hunt died in 2006, and his son, Clark, oversaw the sporting legacy his father had built up over time. The Crew's Columbus Crew Stadium is the first MLS soccer-specific stadium. The Crew played their home games at Ohio Stadium on the campus of Ohio State University until 1999 when they moved into their splendid new home. The mascot for the Crew is Crew Cat, and the team colors are black and gold..
Winning the 2002 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup (named for their owner after his death, and the oldest competition in the United States), defeating the Los Angeles Galaxy 1-0.
The Crew also reached the 1998 Open Cup, but an impending hurricane forced the postponement and relocation of the game to Chicago's Soldier Field, home of the Chicago Fire, who eventually won the trophy 2-1 in overtime. The Crew also won the 2004 Supporter's Shield, which is awarded to the team with the best record over the period of the regular season.
