The team originally known as the Dallas Burn have experienced a few changes since their debut in the 1996 MLS inaugural year. Dallas initially played at the Cotton Bowl until 2002 but moved to Dragon Stadium in Southlake, Fort Worth to escape an unfavorable lease with the Cotton Bowl. Dallas Burn moved back to the Cotton Bowl in 2004 after their fans insisted on it, and they realized they could make more money from Dallas Burn tickets and alcohol sales, which were prohibited at Southlake.

FC Dallas' colors are red, white, and blue. The nickname "Hoops" has been used as part of marketing campaigns, a reference to the horizontal bands on their uniforms. Similar nicknames have been given to other teams sporting the novel style, such Glasgow Celtic F.C. and Queens Park Rangers. Fans have also called Dallas The Red Stripes.

FC Dallas tickets are definitely in demand, in fact the club implemented what was called Hoops Nation in the 2006 season, an official supporters' club that provides fans with two free tickets each season, plus a t-shirt, and a variety of other benefits. A supporters' group, called Inferno, works with the club to receive discounted FC Dallas tickets for the benefit of those belonging to the Hoops Nation. There are other supporters organizations associated with the FC Dallas family, and they are all crazy for tickets to FC Dallas games at the Cotton Bowl.
