About the Show:Clybourne Park is a play by Bruce Norris. It is a dark comedy which references Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun by portraying events set before and after it. Using Hansberry's play about the racially charged real estate transactions in a Chicago neighborhood as an anchor, it presents the evolution of this issue as it relates to upward mobility and the pursuit of happiness for people of different races in different times. Clybourne Park premiered in 2010 at New York's Playwrights Horizons and opened at London's Royal Court Theatre shortly thereafter. It was warmly received and won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Play and the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Thanks to this success, a Broadway production was set to open on April 12, 2012. Plot Synopsis:The year is 1959 and Bev and Russ are getting ready to sell their home in the white, middle-class neighborhood of Clybourne Park in Chicago. A neighbor comes over with his wife to inform them that the family buying the house is black and asks them to sell their home to the church instead so that property values won't suffer. The couples argue about the possible issues that could arise from integrating the neighborhood and eventually turn to Bev's and Russ' black housekeeper and her husband to back them up. Russ eventually tires of the arguing and throws everyone out, stating that he no longer cares about his neighbors since their cruelty to his Korean War veteran son led him to kill himself. 50 years later, Clybourne Park has become an all-black neighborhood. A white couple seeks to buy and renovate the same house and enters negotiations with a black couple representing a neighborhood group. Interestingly, the white couple's lawyer is the daughter of Bev's and Russ' neighbors, and the black woman is a descendant of the family who bought Bev's and Russ' home. The conversation soon turns from housing codes to racial issues, uncovering resentments from both sides. Order your Clybourne Park tickets now to see the drama unfold.
