About the Theatre:The original Circle in the Square Theatre was founded at 5 Sheridan Square in Greenwich Village, but the company did not have a theatre license. In 1960, they moved to the Circle in the Square Downtown at 159 Bleecker Street (a former movie house also in Greenwich Village). It wasn't until 1970 that the current home of the Circle in the Square Theatre was built along with its sister theatre, the adjoining and much larger Gershwin Theatre. The Circle in the Square is notable for being one of only two Broadway theatres with a thrust stage (the other being Lincoln Center's Vivian Beaumont Theatre), and it also has the capacity to present shows in the round. It is further notable for one of only two sub-terranean houses on Broadway (the other being the Stephen Sondheim Theatre). The first Broadway production at the current Circle in the Square Theatre was Eugene O'Neill's drama Mourning Becomes Electra, which opened on November 15, 1972. In the years since, it has presented many great plays and musicals, including the work of Anton Chekhov, Tennessee Williams, Rodgers and Hart, and Stephen Sondheim. It is also the home of the Circle in the Square Theatre School, the only accredited drama school associated with a running Broadway theatre. Notable Productions:
