A number of injuries had sidetracked important offensive players, and the team wrapped up the 2005 NFL season ranked 31st in passing yardage per game. People automatically believed that a tight end or wide receiver would be acquired during the free agency period or the drafts to improve the offense, but Jerry Angelo and Lovie Smith traded away their first picks and drafted five defensive players instead. Devin Hester came in to plug the hole left by cornerback Jerry Azumah and punt returner Bobby Wade, and a host of other rearrangements occurred, presumably designed to reconfigure and add a more effective shape to the Bears' roster. Most did not agree, and the staff copped a lot of criticism from those who believed that a strengthened offense was the only way to go.
