Biography: Bette Midler grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she began singing at an early age. She earned enough money playing an extra in the film, Hawaii, to move to New York City, where she pursued her dream to be a performer. She performed in the musical Fiddler on the Roof on Broadway, playing Tzeitel, the oldest daughter. Midler's singing performances around the city reached the ears of the owner of the Continental Baths, who immediately offered her a job. Midler developed her typical over-the-top routine while performing at the Baths, and it came to be her hallmark. The outrageous jokes and revealing costumes combined with her distinctive voice and she caused a sensation.
After being discovered by Ahmet Ertugun, the president of Atlantic Records, Midler made her first record album, The Divine Miss M, which reached Number 9 on Billboard's Top 200 Chart and went platinum. She won her first Grammy in 1973 for Best New Artist.
Midler was to star in myriad popular movies, including Down and Out in Beverly Hills, Ruthless People, Outrageous Fortune, and Big Business. But the movie which people have come to associate with Bette Midler by far the most is the now legendary Beaches, of which she says, "Thank God I made the right decision and played the character who lives!"
Midler's qualifications and honors are many and varied. Forty years in the business has seen her collect four Grammys, four Golden Globes, three Emmys, a Tony Award and star in innumerable record-breaking performances since those early days in New York City. In February, 2008, The Divine Miss M's new show opens at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, and will be her biggest and most spectacular gig yet.
