About the Theatre:Originally called the Stuyvesant Theatre, architect George Keister designed this venue for impresario David Belasco, who renamed it for himself in 1910. The theatre was built with the most luxurious materials available, including Tiffany lighting, rich woodwork, and elaborate murals painted by American artist Everett Shinn. It also included a ten-room penthouse apartment that Belasco used for both office space and living quarters until his death in 1931. After being leased to Katharine Cornell and then Elmer Rice, the Shuberts bought the theatre in 1949. They leased it to NBC for a few years, but returned it to legit theatrical use in 1953. In its early years, the theatre presented plays by many playwrights including A.A. Milne (who also wrote the Winnie-the-Pooh stories) and Belasco himself. Interestingly, there was a rumor for years that David Belasco's ghost haunted the theatre, and many claimed that after the run of the risque revue Oh, Calcutta!, which features extensive, full frontal nudity of the actors and actresses, his ghost stopped appearing. Recently, the theatre has hosted such shows as the short-lived Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, a special presentation by comic Kathy Griffin, and the Judy Garland bio-play End of the Rainbow.
