About the Theatre:Designed by Herbert J. Krapp and built by the illustrious Shubert family, this theatre was named for actress Ethel Barrymore, who was invited to open the house in a production of her choice. She chose The Kingdom of God for her first production and returned to the theatre many times over the next few years to star in other plays, including The Love Duel (1929) and The School for Scandal (1931). The Ethel Barrymore is the only remaining theatre built by the Shuberts for specific performers who were affiliated with them. It is also one of the only theatres that has run continuously as a legitimate house (whereas many other older theatres have been used for various purposes in their histories). The Barrymore has presented everything from Shakespeare to Tennessee Williams to David Mamet, and even a few musicals, including The Life and Putting It Together. In 2012, it welcomed a star-studded revival of Death of a Salesman, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote, Doubt) and Andrew Garfield (The Social Network, The Amazing Spider-Man).
