Bare Information

About the Show:

Bare, also known as Bare: A Pop Opera, is a rock musical that focuses on several students in a Catholic boarding school struggling with faith, love, sexual orientation, body image, and other coming-of-age issues. It debuted at the Hudson Theatre in Los Angeles in 2000 and was produced off-Broadway in 2004. The original off-Broadway cast included Jenna Leigh Green (Wicked, Sabrina, The Teenage Witch) and Wallace Smith (Godspell, The Lion King). Green can be heard on the album, along with Matt Doyle (Spring Awakening, War Horse), among others.

Since the off-Broadway premiere, Bare gained a cult following and was produced at several other venues over the next few years. In 2012, a new off-Broadway production was undertaken, directed by Stafford Arima (Altar Boyz, Carrie) and presented at New World Stages. Plot Synopsis:

It's the Feast of the Epiphany at St. Cecilia's Boarding School, and altar boy Peter is struggling with a secret. He encounters Jason, the resident golden boy and his roommate and secret lover, who tries to comfort him about their relationship. After auditions for the school's production of Romeo and Juliet, the cast is set: Jason is cast as Romeo, Ivy as Juliet, Peter as Mercutio, Matt (who is in love with Ivy) as Tybalt, and Nadia (Jason's overweight, sassy sister) as the Nurse.

On a trip to a rave, planned by party boy Lucas (who brings several illegal drugs along), Matt dances with Ivy and Peter with Jason, who refuses to come out and make their relationship public for fear of losing everything and being condemned. But he doesn't know that Matt has seen the two kiss outside the party. The next day, Matt has a party at which Jason tries to distance himself from Peter and Ivy ignores Matt. Matt and Peter drink together and comfort each other and Peter reveals his relationship with Jason to Matt, who quickly leaves.

When emotions come to a head at Romeo and Juliet rehearsal, Peter asks Jason to come home with him for break so he can come out, but Jason breaks up with him instead, too afraid of what his family would think. As Peter leaves for break, he and Matt pine for their loves while Nadia yearns to be noticed and Jason sleeps with Ivy, hoping it will fix his problems. Can these students find the courage to be true to themselves? Order your Bare tickets today to discover the second half of this dramatic story.
