Barclays Center Hosting Brooklyn Nets in the Playoffs!!

The Barclays Center is an estimated $1 billion sports arena in Brooklyn, New York, and is the home of the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets, who previously played in Newark, New Jersey. The Brooklyn Nets mark the return of major league sports to Brooklyn since the Brookly Dodgers departed to Los Angeles in 1957. The Barclays Center groundbreaking took place on March 11, 2010 and the arena opened to the public on September 28, 2012 with a Jay-Z concert.

The arena is part of a nearly $5 billion business and residential complex located at the intersection of Flatbush and Atlantic Avenues, near the Brooklyn Museum and the Brooklyn Botanical Garden and within walking distance of Park Slope and Fort Greene neighborhoods. Designed by architectural firm Ellerbe Becket and SHoP Architects, the arena will host concerts, conventions and other sporting events along with the Brooklyn Nets.

Developer Forest City Ratner acquired the Nets in 2004 and is the lead developer on the project. Located near the Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center subway station and the Long Island rail Road’s Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn, it is one of the most transit-accessible locations in the city with 11 different subway lines ending at the Barclays Center. London-based Barclays plc. paid close to $200 million for the naming rights to the stadium for the next 20 years. Three articulated bands make up the external shape of the arena, and a glass curtain wall covered by a latticework of 12,000 steel panels is meant to evoke Brooklyn’s brownstones. An Oculus extends over a 5,660-square-foot section of the plaza outside the main entrance and a display screen loops around the inside of the structure. A near-40,000-square-foot entrance plaza features a Transit Connection that connects with the Atlantic Avenue subway station and is the centerpiece of the plaza. The scoreboard will be visible from the plaza, as the basketball court is situated below ground level. The arena is also pursuing LEED Silver certification.
