About the Show:
Avenue Q is not your kids' puppet show. It, often hilariously, explores adult themes like pornography, racism, homosexuality, and schadenfreude, all in the ironic form of an educational children's television show. The cheeky and irreverent attitudes of the characters offset by the risque subject matter will have you rolling on the floor, while the searing truth of brutally honest real life questions will provoke you to examine how crazy your own life can be. Avenue Q tickets are your passes into a crazy world of furry puppets, Asian stereotypes, and, you guessed it: Gary Coleman. Nothing is taboo when you set foot onto Avenue Q!
Despite (and because of) Avenue Q's silly and scandalous nature, it has been critically acclaimed and supremely popular. It won the coveted 2004 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Original Score. It also received nominations for Lead Actor John Tartaglia, Lead Actress Stephanie D'Abruzzo, and Director Jason Moore. Impressively, the show ran on Broadway from 2003 to 2009 with 2,534 performances (earning it the distinction of being the 22nd longest-running show in Broadway history); in October 2009 it moved off-Broadway to New World Stages, where it continues to play today, so you can still pick up your very own Avenue Q tickets and enjoy this landmark musical.
If you love Avenue Q, don't forget to check out The Book of Mormon, another of Writer/Composer Robert Lopez's hit shows, which he developed with Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the creators of South Park.
Plot Synopsis:
Princeton is a fresh-faced, naive college graduate with a B.A. in English and not much else. On his continuing search for an affordable apartment, he lands in the somewhat shabby New York outer-borough neighborhood of Avenue Q. The street is filled with an assortment of eccentric characters, including: Kate Monster, a sweet kindergarten teaching assistant; Rod, a fastidious Republican banker; Nicky, Rod's slovenly roommate; Brian, a recently unemployed aspiring comedian; Christmas Eve, Brian's Japanese fiancee and a therapist with no clients; Trekkie Monster, a coarse shut-in obsessed with the Internet; and Gary Coleman, a former child actor who is now the superintendent. All of the avenue's residents express their own challenges and disappointments as Princeton meets them.
Meanwhile, Nicky suspects that Rod is gay and tries to assure him that it would be ok if he was, but Rod vehemently denies it. Princeton begins his search for a purpose in life when Kate tells him her dream of opening a school for monsters. When Princeton asks whether she and Trekkie are related (because they are both monsters), she calls Princeton racist, to which Princeton and the others reply that everyone is racist sometimes. Later, Kate's boss asks her to teach a lesson all by herself, and she plans to teach the class about the wonders of the internet; Trekkie Monster continually interrupts her planning with claims that the Internet is for porn, and several of the guys agree. One night, Princeton gives Kate a mixed tape and asks Kate on a date to a local club. The performer is Lucy the Slut, an indiscreet singer, and the night ends with Princeton and Kate consummating their relationship. But when Brian and Christmas Eve's wedding starts to scare Princeton about the possibility of commitment, he panics and dumps Kate, who storms off. Princeton is now jobless, out of money (since he spent a check from his parents on beer), and feeling lower than ever. But he may just find out that his neighborhood is a pretty special place, and his dreams are not dead yet. Get your Avenue Q tickets today to see how Princeton and the other underdogs get through the tough times in their lives with perseverance and friendship.
